Gurez Valley
The Hidden Frontier
Gurez Valley Overview
Gurez Valley unfolds beyond the 3,000-metre Razdan Pass, a Dardic-speaking frontier region that stayed off the tourist map until a special permit system opened it up in the last decade. Wooden Dard-Shin villages line the turquoise Kishanganga River beneath the ruins of Habba Khatoon Peak — named for the 16th-century poet-queen. Gurez rewards travellers seeking Kashmir before the crowds: no houseboats, no souvenir stalls, just river, pine and mountain silence.
