Sonamarg Overview

Sonamarg — the 'Meadow of Gold' — marks the point where the Kashmir Valley gives way to the high Himalaya on the road toward Kargil and Leh. The Sindh River rushes alongside glacier peaks, and a short trek or pony ride reaches Thajiwas Glacier, where snow lingers even in July. Further treks lead to the alpine lakes of Vishansar and Krishansar, making Sonamarg as much a trekking base as a day-trip destination.

• This is the last major stop before Ladakh if you're continuing overland to Leh.
